Craft Festival Ends For Good
Sisters End Long
Standing Tradition
While
celebrating the success of their Craft Festival held for
the past 21 years, the Sisters of St. Joseph of
Springfield have decided it is time to move towards a
different event for the future.
The unanimous decision by
the Festival Steering Committee and the SSJ Leadership
follows an announcement last fall that a $6 million HUD
grant will fund the conversion of the Mont Marie
Conference Center to low income elderly housing.
Construction is expected to begin within the next 18
months, precluding any more SSJ Craft Festivals from being
held on the grounds of Mont Marie.
The Committee looked into
other possible venues but concluded that it would
difficult if not impossible to maintain the wonderful
sense of community and spirit of the SSJ Festival at
another location.
Sister Jane Morrissey,
former president of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, comments:
“In listening to our friends over the past few weeks, we
realized that the ancient words are true; there is a
season for everything. The season for Festival has
run its course, and a new season is arriving.”
