can find Sisters of St. Joseph just about anywhere. We
were founded to discover where the need was greatest. We
were to go there with love of God and love of neighbor
without distinction. For over 350 years, that’s what we
have been doing, and it must be effective, for you can now
find us in 57 countries. The Springfield Congregation and
our lay associates serve in schools and prisons, protest
war and advocate nonviolent means of peacemaking, and work
with and for justice. We do so joyfully.

Golden Jubilee 2011
A group of eight Sisters of St.
Joseph of Springfield celebrated fifty years of religious
life with a Mass and private reception at Mont Marie
September 11, 2011. The liturgy included a renewal of vows
taken by the Sisters in 1961. The Jubilarians
included the following Sisters:
Sister Maureen Broughan
(Shawn Mary) was born in Greenfield,
Mass. and entered from Blessed Sacrament Parish there. She
taught at Cathedral Elementary in Springfield, St. Stephen
and St. Ann Schools in Worcester and then at Holyoke
Catholic High School in Holyoke. She did pastoral ministry
at St. Cecilia’s Parish, Wilbraham, served as associate
director of admissions for Elms College and then at the
Bureau of Exceptional Children & Adults at Jericho. Sister
served the missions in Guatemala through Maryknoll and
upon her return she worked for the Maryknoll Fathers and
Brothers in Maryknoll’s Cross-Cultural Training Services
as program coordinator. She was vice-president of the SSJ
Community, and later founded, along with Sister Jane
Morrissey, Homework House of Hermano Pedro in Holyoke
where she continues her ministry as executive director.

Barbara Faille (Francis
Richard) entered from St. Francis of Assisi Parish, North
Adams, Mass. Sister taught in the Greenfield Public School
system before entering the Community, then taught at
Cathedral High School, Springfield, before becoming
principal at Marianhill Jr.-Sr. High School, Southbridge.
She later taught at St. Joseph High School in Pittsfield
for 20 years and also served as director of development
for the Pittsfield Catholic Schools. For the last 16
years, Sister has ministered as pastoral associate at St.
Charles Borromeo Parish, Pittsfield where she continues to
serve.

Catherine Leary (Kathleen
James) entered from Holy Name Parish. Sister taught at Our
Lady of Hope School and Cathedral High School, Springfield
before beginning work in Religious Education at Holy Name
Parish and as a consultant for the Diocese of Springfield
Religious Education Office. She served as a pastoral
minister at Annunciation Parish in Florence and then Holy
Name Parish, Springfield. After serving on the Leadership
Team for the SSJ Community she returned to Holy Name
Parish where she continues to serve as pastoral minister.
Sister
Joan Magnani (Alice
Peter) was born in Springfield, Mass. and entered from St.
Michael’s Cathedral. She taught at Our Lady of Hope School
in Springfield and Immaculate Conception School in
Easthampton and then began work at the Bureau for
Exceptional Children and Adults at Jericho in Holyoke. She
has held several positions there over the last 39 years
including director of Special Religious Education,
associate director and finally director, a position she
still holds as she continues to minister with people with
developmental disabilities.

Mass., Sister Elaine
Moskal (Beatrice Joseph)
entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield
Massachusetts from Sacred Heart Parish in Webster. She
taught in the Worcester Diocese for two years prior to
moving to R.I. Since 1969, she has ministered for many
years in the Diocese of Providence, R.I. including at St.
Catherine Academy in Newport, Sacred Heart High School and
Bishop Keough Regional High School, Pawtucket, St. Francis
Xavier Academy, both in Providence and Coventry as well as
St. Leo Parish, Pawtucket. She is presently videographer
for the Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph and
homemaker for Sisters and the elderly in the Pawtucket
area.

Born in
Springfield, Mass. and raised in West Springfield,
Sister Judith O'Connell
(Martin Elizabeth) entered from Immaculate Conception
Parish in West Springfield. She taught at Cathedral High
School, Springfield and St. Mary High School, Milford,
where she served as guidance director for one year. After
ministering as Catholic Chaplain at Smith College for
fifteen years and in the Development Office at the Elms
for three years, Sister became the Vicar for Religious for
the Diocese of Springfield where she has served for over
20 years.

Sister Janet
Provost (George
Bernadette) was born in Webster, Mass. and entered from St
Louis Parish there. She has taught at a number of schools
in the Springfield Diocese including Our Lady of Hope and
Holy Name Schools in Springfield and St. Michael’s,
Northampton. She also taught at Sacred Heart School,
Pawtucket, R.I. and Marianhill Jr. – Sr. High School,
Southbridge. She also served as guidance counselor at St.
Mary School, Westfield, Mary Immaculate School, Holyoke
and Holy Name High School and St. Peter Marian Jr. – Sr.
High School in Worcester. Sister Janet also was religious
education coordinator at St. Joseph Parish, Vinton, La.
and pastoral associate at St. Louis Parish in Webster.
Presently, she tutors in the after school homework help
program at the Marie Anne Center in Worcester.

A native of
Worcester, Sister Julia M.
Sullivan (Joseph
Veronica) entered from St. Stephen Parish there. She
taught at St. Rose of Lima School, Warwick, R.I. and for
nine years at St. Joseph Central High School, Pittsfield,
where she went on to become principal and serve in that
capacity for 13 years. She currently ministers at the
Berkshire County Sheriff’s Office as the Deputy
Superintendent of Programs/Treatment.
Special Anniversaries
2011
Sisters of St.
Joseph of Springfield who entered religious life 60, 65,
70 or 75 years ago, celebrated their anniversaries June
8. The Sisters marked the occasion with a Mass and
private gathering at Mont Marie in Holyoke, where the
Congregation’s Motherhouse is located.
Springfield
Bishop Timothy McDonnell, who celebrated the Mass, noted
that the Sisters had a combined total of 2035 years of
service “to God and to the people of God” and he thanked
them for answering the call and giving hope to all the
people that they served.

Sister Marion
Hurley (Margaret Eugene)
was born in Holyoke, Mass. and entered from St. Jerome
Parish there. She ministered as teacher for 30 years in
schools in the Springfield, Providence and Worcester
Dioceses. She was principal at St. Mary School,
Northampton and St. Jerome School, Holyoke. She was also a
member of the Sisters of St. Joseph Executive Board and
worked in Library Services at Elms College in Chicopee.
She lives at Mont Marie.
Sister Joseph Ann Moran, born in
Worcester, Mass., entered from St. Stephen Parish there.
She taught at St. Mary High School, Milford, Mass. for 23
years and later served at Elms College as registrar and
also in the Academic Resource Center. She retired in 1999
and currently resides at the Mont Marie Health Care
Center.

A native of Swansea, Mass.,
Sister St.
Louis Paquette entered from St. Louis de France Parish
there. She was a teacher in the Diocese of Fall River for
34 years including St. Michael School, Ocean Grove, Mass.
and Blessed Sacrament in Fall River. Sister later served
as director and principal of the Montessori School of the
Angels in Westport, MA. She retired to Mont Marie in 2001.

Richard Maria Allen was born in Webster, Mass.
and entered from St. Louis Parish in Webster. She was a
teacher for 15 years in the Diocese of Springfield and
then spent 21 years in the Diocese of Worcester at St.
Mary School, Southbridge. In 1980 Sister began a second
career as a nurse's aide at Liberty Nursing Home and later
Providence Home both in Southbridge. She retired in1994
and resides at Mont Marie Health Care Center.

Sister
Theresa Derouin was born in Chicago, Ill. and
entered from St. Mary Parish, Southbridge, Mass. She was
teacher for 50 years in the Dioceses of Springfield,
Providence and Worcester in their language departments,
including 14 years at St. Mary’s in Westfield and 23 years
at Cathedral High School. She retired in 1994 and lives at
St. Joseph Residence at Mont Marie.

A native of Worcester, Mass.,
Sister
Richard Francis Doran entered from St. Ann Parish there.
She taught for 47 years in the Diocese of Springfield,
including 35 at Cathedral High School. She served as
director of Summer Vacation School at Goosebay Air Force
Base, Labrador, Canada for seven years. After her
retirement from Cathedral, she worked in the Mont Marie
Development Office until 2003. She lives at Mont Marie
Health Care Center.

Sister Imelda Maria Fallon
was born in
Southbridge, Mass. and entered from St. Mary Parish there.
She was a teacher for 31 years in the Dioceses of
Springfield and Worcester and later coordinator of Retired
Sisters, Mont Marie. Sister then served as media
coordinator, Office of Religious Education, Springfield,
and later as secondary librarian/media, at Cathedral High
School, Springfield. She was director of the Mont Marie
Gift Shop for a time and the retired to Mont Marie in
2004.

Born in Westfield, Mass.,
Sister Emily
Kane (John Mary) entered from St. Mary Parish, Westfield.
She was a teacher for 34 years in the Dioceses of
Springfield, Providence and Worcester including 17 years
at St. Joseph/Hazard Memorial School in Newport. She later
served as pastoral assistant at St. Margaret Mary Parish,
Windsor, Conn. and St. Mary Parish, Thorndike, where she
later became associate pastor. She worked for a time at
Mont Marie Conference Center and as a tutor for Gray
House, Springfield. She retired to Mont Marie in 1998.

Sister Mary Bernadette Lunney was born
in Worcester, Mass., and entered from St. Bernard Parish,
in that city. She taught for 28 years at various schools
in the Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester. She was a missionary to
Africa and later became a licensed practical nurse. She
served in pastoral ministry at St. Mary's Parish, Cashton,
Wis. and St. Teresa and St. Thomas Parish in Providence,
R.I. She then served as a nurse for the retired sisters at
Mont Marie Retirement Residence. She retired in 2000 and
now lives at Mont Marie.

Sister
Elizabeth Molloy (James Gertrude) entered from St. Joseph
Parish, there. She taught for 38 years in the Dioceses of
Springfield and Worcester including 10 years at St. Jerome
School, Holyoke. She was CCD coordinator for nine years at
St. Cecilia Parish, Wilbraham, and coordinator of New
Initiatives Programs at Gray House, Springfield. She was
director of Religious Education at St. Patrick and
Nativity of the BVM Parishes in Chicopee, and then
receptionist at the Maguire Center at Elms College in
Chicopee. She retired in 2002 and resides at Mont Marie.

Sister Ann Mungovan
(Margaret John)
was born in Worcester, Mass. and entered from St. Ann
Parish, there. A teacher for 30 years in the Dioceses of
Springfield and Worcester, including Sacred Heart School,
Holyoke and St. Louis School Webster, Sister also spent 21
years as attendance secretary for Cathedral High School.
She retired in 1996 and lives at Mont Marie Health Care
Center.

Born in North Adams,
Sister Edward
Maria Sharron entered from St. Francis Parish, there. She
was a teacher for 40 years in the Dioceses of Springfield
and Worcester. She spent 14 years on the Parish support
staff at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Our Lady of Hope
Parishes, Springfield. She was housekeeper at Our Lady of
Hope Rectory, followed by 14 years as housekeeper at the
Bishop's Residence, Springfield. She retired 2004 and
lives at Mont Marie Health Care Center.

Sister Frances Barry (Philip John) was
born in Woonsocket, R.I. and entered from St. Louis
Parish, Webster, Mass. She taught for 26 years in the
Dioceses of Springfield and Providence. She began her work
in pastoral ministry at St. Charles Parish, Pittsfield and
served later at St. Paul Cathedral Parish, Worcester. She
worked in outreach to the elderly at Our Lady of the
Rosary Parish and at Dodepark Rest Home both in Worcester.
She retired in 2006 and lives in Worcester.

Sister Ann T.
Butler (Catherine John) entered from Our Lady of Hope
Parish, Springfield. She taught in schools in the
Springfield and Providence Dioceses including 12 years at
Cathedral High School, Springfield. She has also worked in
the Intercessory Prayer Ministry at St. Patrick Parish,
Providence, R.I. She is retired and living at Mont Marie
Senior Residence.

Sister Mary Lou Lacey (Edward Grace)
was born in Holyoke, and entered from St. Jerome Parish
there. She taught for 31 years in Springfield Diocesan
Schools including 19 years at Cathedral High School. She
then served as director of public information and public
relations at Elms College in Chicopee until her retirement
in 2001. She currently resides in Springfield. Sister has
also ministered at Weston Center for Women.

Sister Mary F.
Lavelle (Agnes Philippa) entered from Sacred Heart Parish,
Holyoke. She served as an educator for 41 years in the
Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester including 10 years
at Cathedral High School, Springfield. She was
co-administrator of the Mont Marie Infirmary/Senior
Sisters. Following a year as pastoral minister at Blessed
Sacrament Parish, Northampton, she became Community
archivist at Mont Marie. Sister lives at Mont Marie where
she serves in the Companioning Ministry.

Sister Mildred J. Marengo (Maria
Peter) was born in Holyoke, and entered from Holy Rosary
Parish there. She spent some 33 years as a teacher in the
Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester including 21 years
at Cathedral High School. She worked in Campus Ministry at
the Newman Centers at both Amherst College and UMass
Amherst, and was coordinator for Vocation Education at
Mont Marie. She then worked as a grant writer for Weston
Rehab, Mont Marie Health Care Center, and Mont Marie Child
Care Center. She retired in 2006 and lives at the Mont
Marie Senior Residence.

Sister Eileen T.
O’Neill (Maria Martin) entered from Sacred Heart Parish
there. She has been a teacher for more than 50 years in
the Dioceses of Springfield, Worcester and Providence
including 22 years as an elementary teacher at St. Mary
School, Westfield. Currently she works as an enrichment
and remedial teacher at St. Mary’s and lives in Holyoke.

Sister Estelle Santarpia (St. Pierre)
was born in Fall River, Mass. and entered from St.
Elizabeth parish there. She was a teacher for 14 years in
the Diocese of Fall River and Superior at St. Joseph
Parish in Vinton, La. She served her Congregation as
mistress of novices and provincial before a 1974 merger
with the Springfield Sisters. She worked at the LaSalette
Retreat House in New Hampshire and in parish ministry at
Sacred Heart Parish, Milford, Mass. Currently she is a
computer instructor for the Milford Council on Aging and
lives in Milford.

Sister Marion
Denise Scanlan (Marion Ruth) entered the Rutland
Congregation from Sacred Heart Parish, Weymouth, Mass. She
was a teacher in the Diocese of Burlington, Vt. for 22
years including a year as principal of St. Peter Junior
High School in Rutland. She later served as secretary to
the president of the Congregation, managed the
Congregation Gift Shop, and served on the Leadership Team.
She is retired and living at Mont Marie.

Sister Mary
Behan entered from St. Joseph Church, Newport and worked
in education for 19 years in the Dioceses of Springfield
and Worcester. Sister worked in spiritual direction and
retreat ministry in Rumford, East Providence and
Middletown, R.I. and pastoral minister at St. Teresa of
Avila Parish, Providence. She later served as coordinator
of spirituality at St. Barnabas Church Portsmouth, and Our
Lady of Peace Spiritual Life Center, Narragansett. She
also served the Congregation for a time as a member of the
Executive Council. She retired and now lives at Mont Marie
Senior Residence.
Sister Margaret Henry Blickarz
was
born in West Rutland, Vt. and entered from St. Stanislaus
Parish, West Rutland. She taught for 28 years at various
schools in the Diocese of Burlington including St. Mary
School, Fair Haven. She was a CCD teacher at St.
Stanislaus School in West Rutland for a time. She is
retired and living at St. Joseph Kervick Residence in
Rutland.

Born in West Springfield, Mass.,
Sister Mary E. Gallagher
(James Irene) entered from St.
Thomas the Apostle Parish there. She taught for nine years
in schools in the Springfield Diocese until she became
assistant librarian at Elms College, Chicopee. She was
also a research scholar at Emmanuel College and served as
an editor for Catholic Library World and was an Officer of
the Catholic Library Association. Sister became Elms
College Archivist in 2000 and lives in Chicopee.

Sister
Jean Marie Lyonnais entered the Fall River Congregation
from Sacred Heart Church, Fairhaven, Mass. She taught for
more than 40 years in the Fall River Diocese including 28
years at St. Joseph School and St. Mary School Schools in
New Bedford. She served for a time as an aide at St.
James/St. John School until her retirement in 2005. She
lives in New Bedford.

Sister Kathleen McGurk (Catherine
Mary) was born in Holyoke, and entered from Blessed
Sacrament Parish there. She taught for 10 years at schools
in the Springfield Diocese and served as mistress of
postulants and novices at Mont Marie. She also did
Pastoral Ministry at St. Charles Parish, Pittsfield and
St. Catherine of Sweden Parish, Worcester. She worked at
St. Paul’s Human Services, Worcester, and later Providence
Nursing Home, Worcester as a social worker in the Pastoral
Care Department. She is retired and living at the Mont
Marie Health Care Center.

Sister Irene A. Mizula (William Alice) entered from St. John Cantius
Parish in Northampton. She taught for 15 years in the
Diocese of Springfield and then served as Administrator at
the Mont Marie Infirmary. She worked as a residential
supervisor at Youville House and pastoral associate at St.
Joseph Parish, Worcester. She was a Medical Technologist
at Medical Science Lab, Worcester and Inter-Library
Coordinator at Holy Cross College Science Library. She is
retired and living at St. Joseph Senior Residence, Mont
Marie.
Sister Joan F. Pollock (Maria William)
was born in Philadelphia, Penn. and entered from St.
Joseph Parish, Newport, R.I. She taught for 32 years in
the Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester including nine
years at Cathedral High School, Springfield and 15 years
at St. Peter High School, Worcester. She worked as both
clerk and assistant to the bookkeeper at Worcester’s
Catholic Free Press. Currently she lives in Worcester and
works at the Chancery Office there.

Born in Pawtucket
Sister Vivian Pyne
(Michael Agnes) entered from Sacred Heart Parish there.
She taught for 18 years in the Dioceses of Springfield,
Worcester and Providence. She was founder and director of
Mont Marie Day Care Nursery for 12 years, followed by 12
years as registrar at Genesis Spiritual Life Center in
Westfield. She then served as elder service research
coordinator at Mont Marie. She is retired and living at
Mont Marie Senior Residence.

Sister Elizabeth M. Sullivan (Mary
Timothy) was born in Worcester, Mass. and entered from
Immaculate Conception Parish there. She taught for 20
years in the Dioceses of Springfield and Worcester,
including 11 years at Cathedral Grammar School. She
continues her work at the Elms College Library in Chicopee
as a readers services assistant, where she has served for
the last 27 years. She lives in Chicopee.
